J.D. Crowe, one of the most important band leaders influencing the growth of contemporary bluegrass music, became a household name after releasing a self-titled album on Rounder Records in 1975, an album that figured heavily into the early success of the Rounder label. A host of influential musicians were part of the New South over the years, including Ricky Skaggs, Keith Whitley, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas and Doyle Lawson. J.D. joined Jimmy Martin’s Sunny Mountain Boys in the mid 1950′s then formed the Kentucky Mountain Boys in the 1960′s, eventually changing the name to The New South. J.D. is a member of the International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, The Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, and a Grammy Award winning artist.
Many in the bluegrass music community were understandably concerned in February 2011 when J.D. took a spill when exiting his tour bus, breaking bones in his left arm in multiple places. After surgery and months of therapy, he was back on the road performing dates by late May 2011, and has kept a busy touring schedule since then. J.D.’s retirement is not related to the injuries sustained in that fall, and is happy to report that he fully recovered and is feeling great today. J.D. proclaimed that he made a promise to himself that he would”quit while he still felt good, and can enjoy retirement a little more”. It seems he has kept that promise.

He is currently nominated for both IBMA Mandolin Player of the Year, his band for Instrumental Group of the Year and is also a CMA Nominee for Musician of the Year. Sam was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Instrumentalist from the Americana Music Association in 2009. His most recent release is Circles Around Me on Sugar Hill Records.
Del McCoury has been playing Bluegrass Music professionally for more than 50 years. His storied career has included a Grammy, as well as numerous Grammy nominations, nine IBMA Entertainer of the Year Awards, membership in the Grand Ole Opry, and a National Heritage Fellowship. He has collaborated with everyone from Dierks Bentley to Phish, and has his own festival, DelFest, coming up on it’s sixth year. His most recent release is a tribute to Bill Monroe entitled Old Memories: The Songs of Bill Monroe on McCoury Music. Del is also co-hosting this year’s IBMA Awards show at the Ryman Auditorium on Sept. 27th.
Though both Sam & Del grew up playing traditional bluegrass, their openness to expanding the genre has set them apart in recent years bringing numerous young fans to the music.
